This guide is about the Create a Hidden Folder in Mac OS X. I will try my best so that you understand this guide very well. I hope you all like this guide Create a Hidden Folder in Mac OS X.
You can create a folder hidden from the default Finder view using Mac OS X unix backgrounds. This probably sounds a lot more complicated than it is, and it turns out that it’s really easy to make a completely hidden folder on a Mac.
This walkthrough explains how to create a hidden folder and how to access it in Mac OS itself.
Let’s first create a hidden folder, then use the Mac’s secret folder and also show you how to make it visible again if you change your mind. All of this is based on placing dots in front of the file name.
* Start the terminal (located in / Applications / Utilities) * Type in the command line: mkdir .hiddenfolder Replace the name hiddenfolder freely with any other, leaving the name with spaces and special characters to facilitate handling in the future.
* Now click back on the Finder and press Command + Shift + G brings up the Go to Folder dialog box* Your hidden folder will now open in the Finder. You can drag and drop to the directory you want
You can really make any folder invisible from the Finder (and most applications) just by adding a dot in front of the name, you can do this with existing folders via the command line:
mv Folder .FolderAnd you can make an invisible or hidden folder visible again by flipping this and deleting the dot in front:
mv. folder folder
Note that you can’t type a period in front of a folder or file name in Mac OS X Finder, if you try, this dialog will show you a period “”. is reserved for Mac OS X system software:
You can set Mac OS X to show hidden files yourself by entering a command on the terminal. This will reveal the hidden folder completely in the Finder, but you will also see many other important system files and folders. It is generally not recommended to keep this activated, as it is confusing for many users and makes it easier to accidentally delete important files.
Keep in mind that these folders aren’t completely hidden, and they just don’t show up in Mac OS X Finder. Many applications do not see the folder, but several FTP programs, such as Transmit, have the ability to display invisible files and the folder would be visible to those applications. Similarly, the folder would always be visible through the command line to anyone who typed the ls command and added the -a flag, which means displaying all files, such as: ls -a
If you have Apple Developer Tools installed, you can use a utility called setfile to make any directory or file invisible, read more about hiding files and folders with setfile in Mac OS X, but the visibility restrictions are virtually identical to the technology above : The file is invisible from the Finder, but visible with ls -a or certain applications.
